building noiseAre you a builder or contractor undertaking building work in Brisbane? If so, you’ll need to take note of these restrictions on building noise as set by Brisbane City Council to ensure you don’t fall foul of the law.

Audible Noise and Fines

If building noise is audible during the following times, you may be issued with a fine:

Monday – Saturday 6:30pm – 6:30am: no audible noise allowed
Sunday or public holiday: no noise at any time allowed

(If a public holiday falls on a Saturday then normal Saturday restrictions apply)

Even if you are adhering to these guidelines, certain building noise can still be deemed a nuisance if too loud and you can be issued a direction notice from Council.

How to Reduce Building Noise

Brisbane City Council suggests the following ways to help reduce building noise:

1. Limit work hours
2. Select quieter equipment or use alternatives
3. Carry out work as far away as possible from neighbours and away from sensitive areas such as bedroom windows
4. Regularly service your equipment – lack of maintenance can cause higher noise levels erect a solid fence or barrier
5. Install an acoustic enclosure for fixed equipment such as compressors or vacuum equipment
6. Modify equipment – discuss this option with the manufacturer or installer
7. If noisy work is planned, such as jack hammering, concrete cutting and pouring, discuss this with nearby residents beforehand. A sign on site or distribution of leaflets explaining the hours and duration of operation may help prevent complaints.

Building Noise Exemptions

These noise restrictions may not apply if Council has issued an approval for specific equipment or activities as part of a development approval.
